Argentina – ACSR/AAAC Conductors + Silicone Rubber Insulators for Transmission Line Upgrade Project

Project Background

In recent years, Argentina has been actively modernizing and expanding its power grid, particularly in areas surrounding Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and Rosario, due to growing electricity demand. The national transmission company, Transener, initiated the upgrade and expansion of multiple 132kV and 220kV transmission lines.

For this project, Uni-Cable supplied ACSR and AAAC conductors along with matching silicone rubber insulators, providing a reliable and durable solution for long-distance high-voltage transmission lines.

Products & Specifications

ACSR Conductors (Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced)

  • Structure: Concentric stranded; aluminum outer layer with galvanized steel core

  • Common Sizes: ACSR 240/40, ACSR 300/50, ACSR 400/65

  • Features: High tensile strength, corrosion resistance, suitable for long spans and ice-loaded regions

AAAC Conductors (All Aluminum Alloy Conductor)

  • Structure: Concentric stranded high-strength aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloy

  • Common Sizes: AAAC 200, AAAC 250, AAAC 400

  • Features: Lighter than ACSR, excellent corrosion resistance, ideal for coastal and humid environments

Silicone Rubber Insulators

  • Types: Suspension, rod, and pin insulators

  • Voltage Ratings: 33kV, 66kV, 132kV, 220kV

  • Features: Lightweight, pollution-resistant, UV-resistant, and low maintenance

  • End Fittings: Hot-dip galvanized hardware

Applications & Solutions

In the Argentine transmission line upgrade project:

  • ACSR conductors were applied to 220kV main lines to increase transmission capacity while maintaining mechanical strength.

  • AAAC conductors were used for 132kV coastal and humid region lines to prevent corrosion.

  • Silicone rubber insulators replaced traditional porcelain to address pollution flashover and reduce maintenance.

Uni-Cable also provided complete line hardware packages, including suspension clamps, tension clamps, and preformed armor rods, ensuring safe installation and long-term reliability.

Quality Inspection & Standards

All products were manufactured and tested according to international and South American standards:

  • Conductors: IEC 61089, ASTM B232 (ACSR), ASTM B399 (AAAC)

  • Insulators: IEC 61109, ANSI C29.13

  • Factory Tests: DC resistance, tensile strength, load-bearing, voltage withstand, salt spray, UV aging

Uni-Cable’s factory is ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 certified, ensuring products meet stringent utility requirements.

Export & Packaging

  • Conductors: Moisture-proof wrapping on reinforced steel/wood drums for long-distance shipping

  • Insulators: Individually wrapped and placed in shockproof wooden crates

  • Shipping: Shanghai Port → Buenos Aires Port, ~40 days by sea

  • On-site Support: Uni-Cable engineers provided installation guidance and technical training

Project Outcomes

With Uni-Cable’s products, Argentina successfully upgraded over 300 km of transmission lines:

  • Transmission capacity increased by 25%

  • Line failure rates reduced by 40%

  • Annual maintenance costs significantly lowered

The high-quality conductors and silicone rubber insulators supplied by Uni-Cable were highly praised by the client and further strengthened Uni-Cable’s reputation in the South American power sector.
